Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - This past weekend the Nassau West Sheriff's Department was on alert to handle possible flooding at the Capitol. As of the time of this article, flooding had not become a major problem. However, they are still on stand-by just in case.
According to Nassau West Sheriff Kelly Bartram, "the problem isn't 'flooding,' per se, but rather erosion. When the water runs down Catarina Street, it tends to run in a southeast direction over the western Capitol grounds, thereby causing erosion near the Copper Creek Recreation area, which is still under construction."
Twice so far, the Sheriff's Department in cooperation with the Department of Transportation and the Department of the Interior, has rebuilt the main thoroughfare that runs alongside the Copper Creek Recreation area and connects the Capitol with the Nassau West Benson Embassy.
Actually, make that thrice so far. As this article was being published we learned that the road crew was at it again today repairing the washed out path between the Capitol and the Embassy. Apparently quite a bit of work was done on the path and the surrounding area to try to prevent future washouts.
There have been no injuries or damages reported thus far as a result of two straight days of rain near the Capitol. The Benson Embassy registered an inch and a half of rain in that same period.
