Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - The starting of the brand new basketball league's season has been postponed. The regular season of the IBA, the International Basketball Association, was to begin yesterday, but did not.
The season opener was to occur yesterday afternoon, but IBA co-owner Mike Gearhart, of the Casa Grande Buttless Chaps, did not arrive at the facility until 4:50 PM from Phoenix. Due to the late arrival, there was insufficient time to have the inaugural game.
With IBA co-owner Kelly K. Bartram going on vacation this Friday and through all of next week, it seems best to hold off the season. Gearhart returned from his vacation last week. With all vacations out of the way, hopefully the season will commence without any further delays.
Last week, all of Bartram's teams held open practice. The three teams, in addition to the expansion Seattle Misters, all performed very well in their practice sessions. Also during the week, the Nassau West Gaming Commission finalized some of the aspects of the game that have been rather controversial.
The Gaming Commission, trying to address complaints from the Bartram Conference, made a new rule regarding game interruptions. Now, if a player is interrupted during their turn, when they return to playing, they will be given three practice shots from anywhere on the court they choose. These shots do not count for or against the interrupted player, and are for warm-up purposes only.
Today there was a double-header exhibition game. The first game was between the expansion Hershey Squirts against the expansion Seattle Misters. That game was won by the Misters of the Bartram Conference. The second game was between the Gearhart Conference Casa Grande Buttless Chaps versus the Bartram Conference Nassau West Jackalopes. The Jackalopes won that contest.
The next pre-season games will be on Thursday, ahead of Bartram's vacation starting on Friday. The schedule for Thursday is the Pinal County Pee-Wees against the Benson Rednecks in the first game, and the Marana Munchkins versus the Tombstone Marshals in Game 2.
In theory, the regular season will start on Monday, July 11, in Tucson, AZ, on the first weekday following the return of Bartram from his vacation.
