Be Careful With Fire/Fireworks!

Nassau West Sheriff Kelly Bartram ''arresting'' Josh Hanawalt near Tombstone, AZ, in January, 2004. Photo by Alexine Photography/Chris Walsh. The Nassau West Fire Department (NWFD) is asking for your cooperation at this time, during a very busy fire season, to please be very careful with fire, and fireworks (even though they're illegal).

In about an hour, the City of Benson will be having its annual fireworks extravaganza at Lions Park in Benson, AZ. The show starts at 8:30 PM and will be broadcast live with "fireworks music" on "The Cave," 97.7 FM, in and around the greater Benson metropolitan area.

The NWFD will be on standby to assist the Benson Volunteer Fire Department until midnight. Meanwhile, the Nassau West Sheriff's Department has taken refresher courses on fire safety issues to bolster our fire department.

Last night, about 11:30 PM, Nassau West Sheriff Kelly Bartram personally put out a small fire at the entrance of the Capitol, which had apparently been started about twenty minutes prior in an ashtray. The ashtray was fully ablaze when the Sheriff arrived, and he quickly doused it and removed it from the entryway.

As we are living in an extremely dry tinderbox, please think twice when handling fire, or if you must, fireworks. And for the love of whatever you may consider "holy," please use ashtrays, and don't throw lit cigarettes out the window. Thank you.
